Mr. Smith Goes To Washington via a Time Machine

I have nothing but respect for Frank Capra, I really do. I think It's a Wonderful Life is quite possibly one of the finest films ever made. And who could ever complain about James Stewart? Only an idiot, that's who. And Jean Arthur? She was like the sexy precursor to Bernadette Peters--if I were to do a whole series of posts on underrated, sexy dames, they'd both be right up there with Maria Bello, Mary-Louise Parker, and Diane Lane.

But I have to say that I have a small problem with Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.

Now, it's universally regarded as one of the best movies ever, and you really can't quibble with the acting from Stewart, Arthur, or Claude "Round up the usual suspects!" Raines. If you look this movie up on Amazon, it has a 5 star rating based on user opinion and there isn't much negative said about it at all.

But here's my problem--during the Freakin' Fabulous Filibuster Finale, Mr. Smith goes for about 24 hours. In that time, the bad guy is able to run about a thousand headlines back home in the state paper AND lay out a major ass whooping on a bunch of kids--all without leaving Washington. How does this happen? It's like they're in a timewarp. This kind of annoys me in a major way. I'm all for plot holes in movies like Office Space and that "You'll put your eye out..." Christmas movie, but those are pretty low budget flicks. Seems like someone would have stepped up during this one and said "Wait...you have a ton of shit going on in this 24 hour span that just couldn't have happened." I realize they try to address that with telegrams, but still.... I think this movie is due for an update. After all, this scene would make plenty of sense in the internet age (though I still think they wouldn't have time to put together parades and propaganda trains in 24 hours--and if Howard Dean were in charge it couldn't even happen in 24 months). I'm thinking they could cast Mel "Sugar Tits" Gibson in the lead role, and at some point during the filibuster he could spear a man with an American flag on a pole.

Also, they could have added about 5 minutes more of ending to this movie. Just to wrap things up nicely.
